Tubular "masks" are standard gear now for the sun. These fabric tubes are really the evolution of the bandanna. There are several manufacturers that currently market styles made of material with some level of rated sun protection. I've got one product in development and I'm looking for a name. The fabric pictured offers 15 UPF protection. Do you have a product name suggestion?

ReplyDeleteI live in Florida and I wouldn't wear one, nor do I know anyone who does. I can see the point of using the face drawers if you're visiting from up north, have a very pale complexion, and don't get much sun normally. Otherwise, I just don't see the need (yes Mom, I know about skin cancer).
ReplyDeleteFrom a functionality standpoint, it would seem to trap heat radiating from your head, which is great in the winter, but a very bad idea in August in the tropics.
Steve Huff, Steve Bailey, Marshall Cutchin and Tim Borski are all testing this for me in Florida and have given positive feedback. Two out of the four mentioned have already been affected by skin cancer and wear some type of "face drawers" regularly. Sun protection products are on the rise and this particular style is gaining ground along with UPF shirts, pants and accessories. Comments appreciated Salty. I know this type of headwear won't be everyone's cup of tea.
ReplyDeleteI don't know about that. Maybe if it was really breezy out there then I could see about wearing that thing. Otherwise I would opt for a wide brimmed straw hat instead.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. What's been their reaction towards the heat? It's a serious question because being out on the water can be brutal down here with the sun radiating from on top and off the water. I wade fish, so the one thing I'm limited in carrying is large amounts of water. I usually "power hydrate" the night before, eat that morning to get the electrolytes up, and consume about a gallon of water that day between the drive out and the two nalgenes I carry. Even still at the end of a day, basically hiking flats,I am wiped. In a previous career I suffered heat exhaustion once, so I am more susceptable to heat injuries than those who haven't had one. I'd be concerned with trapping body heat radiating from head, even with a moisture wicking fabric.
What's the feedback on hot weather comfort and overall heat retention?

as for the heat, I live in Savannah, GA and it gets WAY hotter here than it does in the keys in August, and i don't get on my skiff without one. Ever since I started wearing one I have never had heat issues as it is a wicking material. It absorbs perspiration and moves it to the outside where it then starts to evaporate creating a bit of a cooling effect. It also absorbs glare, saves you from windburn on blustery days and keeps the sand gnats out in spring and fall.

ReplyDeleteI also saw the message about being too hot to wear in FL. Some of those guides who live in FL and are concerned with the UV and skin cancer need these. But the comments I had heard about this new face mask is cooler as it moves wweat off your face and you do not feel the sun and glare off the water. I guess anything you wear against your skin will seem to feel hot in those wicked sun and humid Keys conditions. I know they sell a boat load of them all over FL.

ReplyDeleteWell I've arrived at a name choice. When I asked the group I got widely differing opinions so I used "bold simplicity" as the guiding light. This product will be called the Sun Mask. The official name will actually include some fabric nomenclature but that's it. It was time to call a spade a spade. Thank you all for the feedback and interest. Stay tuned for more!
