River Portrait

I created this image from a photo that I took of friend and Way Upstream contributer, Rene Braun. I call it River Portrait. Check out this 90 second Kennebec Brown video showing Rene and Guide Sean McCormick putting a nice brown trout in the net.

Selection

I helped organize a couple of Striper Dealer Camps in '05 and '06. These "camps" were attended by fly fishing retail store owners and staff. I was reviewing some of the images from the '06 Striper Camp folder and came across one that I digitally altered to look like a watercolor. I thought it was worth posting. I call it Selection.

High and Dry

This Rene Braun photo made me laugh when I first saw it. This scenario is a relatively common occurrence here in Maine. The mean tide swing is between 8 and 9 feet and during certain moon phases it jumps by another foot and a half. If you aren't careful you can get stuck on a dropping tide. Rene was there to capture the moment. I call this shot High and Dry....but I'm not sure which guy is High and which one is Dry. I'm sure Rene calls it something else. Click on the link (Rene's name) to see more of his photos.

Sand Eel Pattern

Ever since I posted A use for the pitt and the stem I've been pondering the quill as a fly tying material. I was fishing for stripers recently and the water was loaded with sand eels. I have several sand eel patterns that I like but on my way home after one session I saw these large seagull wing feathers lying in the sand and the vision of this pattern came to me. I'll be testing it out soon. Stay tuned. Click on the picture and mouse over the boxes for more detail.

Watermaster II Wader demo

I read a lot of comments on the wader posts about zippers. I also heard from some readers that they were a little unclear on the roll down feature of the Watermaster II wader. Here's a one minute video that demonstrates how the feature works (turn volume up). The demo does not show that you can relieve yourself without removing layers or a jacket but I think you can see that it is possible for men...for women it's tricky but I've heard tell that it's possible. Keep the wader conversation going. I'm still listening. Phone camera work by Rene Braun.

Migration

Currents change. Temperature changes. Migration. With the movements of herring and tern and degree come the movements of thought and action. Thoughts like wandering flats in Maine wearing surf trunks. Actions like fly fishing in the salt. Migration.

A Walk to the Pool

This landscape shows a friend (Henry Barber) walking across a salt marsh to access a tidal estuary. I call this piece - A Walk to the Pool.
